Dress Like You Give a Damn: Dates and Singles Events

When it comes to attire that people wear to Singles Events and Dates…I have truly seen it all. The good, the bad, and the downright questionable. And let's be honest, friends, sometimes it's the "downright questionable" that's holding you back from making a great first impression.

I get it! I hear all the time that you want to find someone who likes you for you - and clothing can definitely play a part of that. That said, as much as we all hate to admit it - as humans we often can’t help but form first impressions about others. We are all visual creatures and what we wear does send a message about who we are. What story do you want to tell someone who may be assessing you as a potential partner?

So, let's ditch the athleisure and embrace the art of dressing like you give a damn! Here are some affordable tips for both men and women to elevate your dating game:

  • Men: Ditch the sweats! A pair of dark jeans with a nice button down or sweater can go a long way. Upgraded Henley’s or pull overs can also look sharp. But leave the t-shirts and hoodies for hanging at home.

  • Ladies: You don’t have to go overboard! Jeans can also be the perfect look for you as well if you like to keep it casual. Paired with a well-fitted blouse or top in a flattering color and you’ve got yourself an outfit!

  • Shoes and accessories matter: PLEASE ditch ditch your worn-out sneakers and invest in a pair of stylish dress shoes or loafers. If you must wear sneakers - look for a pair that are clean, free of holes and save that pair for your “out on the town” outfits. This will instantly elevate your look. (Ladies - this goes for you, too! You don’t need to rock stilettos to look hot, but you should also leave the ratty gym shoes and Uggs for another day). (**Also, in the summer, a lot of people have very strong feelings about flip flops - especially for men. I would avoid those on dates and save them for the beach!).

  • Details count: Make sure your clothes are clean and ironed. For certain items (like coats and blazers) having them cleaned regularly can really keep them sharp and help them last longer. (I’m a big fan of Best Cleaners - they have locations around the Capital Region and have pick up and delivery options as well!).

  • Fit is Your Friend: No matter what you wear, fit absolutely matters. Clothing that’s too small looks uncomfortable and may reveal more than you’d like to. Clothing that’s too large can look messy. Have a piece you love but the fit isn’t great? Or have trouble finding sizes that work with your body? Finding a tailor is your friend (Best Cleaners also offers alterations and tailoring services!).

  • And Color, too!: Don’t be afraid of color! Color is a great way to enhance your features and stand out in a crowd. Not everyone feels comfortable in color, but if you’re open to experimenting, ask a friend you trust to go shopping with you and try on some different shades to se

  • Grooming is essential: It may go without saying, but brushing and combing your hair, smelling good and making sure your breath is fresh goes a very long way! I also always recommend having a special scent/perfume/cologne that makes you feel fabulous that you reserve just for date nights or singles events.

I know shopping can feel overwhelming and maybe even expensive. But, it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg! Here’s a few ideas to save some money while still looking fresh!

  • Shop your closet: Before heading to the store, take a look at what you already have. You might be surprised at the outfit combinations you can create. Try things on that you may not have worn in some time and get a sense of fit. Maybe you can get some items tailored or, maybe it’s time to donate the old and invest in some new pieces.

  • Thrift store treasures: Don't underestimate the power of thrift stores. You can find unique and stylish pieces at a fraction of the price. They can be great for shoes and accessories, too! Locally, there are some great options like The Vandy and Virtue Consignment.

  • Swap with friends: Organize a clothing swap with your friends. It's a fun way to refresh your wardrobe without spending any money.

Remember, dressing well is not about being someone you're not. It's about presenting the best version of yourself to the world. When you look good, you feel good, and that confidence will shine through on your dates and at singles events. So, let's make a pact to ditch the fashion faux pas and embrace the art of dressing like we give a damn! Your love life will thank you for it.
